I was electrified by a visit to this old university city in the N.W. of Spain. As a centre of higher learning since the 11th century it possesses a broad Moorish influence. As such, this city holds many visual wonders.
I have painted a “grille” along the sides of the piece, to indicate the Arabic script. The rest of the painting depicts the heat of the afternoon, and the shadows of the courtyards with their fountains and pools, denoted by the effervescent blue colours.
